Our Methodology

How We Build a Strong, Diverse Slate

Original research, structured evaluation, and accountability to the board at every stage of the search.

A search is only as good as the slate it produces. We don't rely on a static database or a recycled candidate list. Every search begins with a fresh market map built specifically around the organization's mission, sector, and geography — drawing on three decades of relationships across nonprofit, government, and mission-driven sectors, alongside targeted outreach into networks we don't already know.

Concretely, that means:

Original research, not recycled lists.

We identify candidates through direct outreach and referral chains built for this search — not a resume database search.

Deliberate outreach beyond our existing network.

We actively source from affinity organizations, sector-specific associations, and leadership pipelines that reach candidates who may not be visible through traditional executive search channels.

Structured, consistent evaluation.

Every candidate is assessed against the same criteria, developed with the board at the start of the search — reducing the role that unconscious bias or "fit" shorthand can play in who advances.

Accountability to the board, not just to speed.

We report on the composition of the slate at each stage, so the board can see — and shape — how broad and how deep the search really is.

The result, over 300 searches, has been leadership slates that are both rigorously vetted and genuinely representative of the widest possible pool of qualified candidates.
